Conventions of film openings

  • film title 
  • music/soundtrack-> sets the mood and tone of the film (also the genre)
  • fonts
  • sense of pace
  • director/cast
  • institutional detail. i.e: logos of producing studios, distribution companies
  • introduction of setting-> gives us a sense of location
  • introduction to protagonists
  • diegetic and non-diegetic sound combination

we looked at 'the taking of pelham 1,2,3' to get a better sense of the conventions of film openings.

Classic opening
  • Establish a city scape
  • Building
  • Long shot of window
  • close up of window
  • into the room
  • introduction to characters 
 
We looked at Alfred Hitchcock's 'Physco' and identified that it was a Classic opening
