Evaluation Q5

Location

The location was in a urban alleyway, which would hopefully appeal to a younger audience living in a city

Genre

The genre of the film, is a Action/Thriller with lots of action influence throughout the film

Actors
The main actor is a young, conforming to the typical stereotype of a young successful business man living in london. while wearing a suit, shirt tie & even a leather briefcase. This will hopefully entice the more of a female audience with my dashing looks (Joking).

Action

There is lots of action in the introduction, as you can see the main female character has been kidnapped and is struggling & being abused while trying to escape the wrath of the hooded henchman.
This could ideally appeal to the older male audience, who are entertained by lots of action clips.

SoundScore

The sound-score is very complimentary of the environment the introduction was shot int, it emphasize a pathetic fallacy fo the location, dark, gloomy & distorted. The sound-score is a composition produced by myself, which has lots of urban & garage vibes, this will appeal to the youth more and ideally attract a younger audience.

Name

The name of the film is called 'Extort' emphasizing the dark aspect of  kidnapping displayed in the intro.

Q1. Evaluation - 'Extort'. Conventional Film Opening?

The Conventions of film openings are the specific things that are shown at the beginning of all films.

  • The title of the film
  • The Location
  • Title Sequence
  • Introduction to main characters
  • Music

we have followed the conventions as you can see from the bullet points listed ^, we have included in our film.

The conventions of a title sequence are the names of the people who were involved in the making of the film from the director to the cast.

Instead of doing a hand drawn storyboard I thought it would be good if we did a digital storyboard. This is so that we were differentiated from our class.

I learnt many camera skills. For example-
-How to focus
-Pan
-Tilt
-The difference between a pan and a tilt.
-Set up tripod, adjust the height
-Record
-Frame a shot
-1/3rd rule
-180 degrees rule

Mise en scene- For our preliminary we were well prepared and has costumes for it. This is similar to our actual thriller; however, we were more organised, and had to be, because we were shooting at and unfamiliar location and there was no room for errors.

The mise en scene we had in our thriller was the protagonist wearing a suit, carrying a suitcase and shooting inside a house.

Editing- I learnt how to import and export films in and out of Final Cut Pro and Sound Track Pro. I learnt how to compose match cuts, how to make cross cutting, add music and add sound effects.

I learnt how to add titles on to our film opening and the way in which you add special effects onto the video. For example, I added a static effect onto the kidnapped video scene, so that it looks realistic. Kidnappers wouldn't have expensive equipment and I wanted to illustrate that.

I learnt that you need a video drive to access Final Cut Pro and Sound Track Pro.

When I filmed the preliminary I didn't have much experience. It would take me a long time to edit. Now however, I am confident in editing, filming and have many useful skills.

Evaluation Q1

I have answered question one using a Producers Commentary, i recorded the audio via a microphone on quicktime in sync to the video, then importing them it into final cut, adjusting & trimming the audio on separate channels and then finally exporting it as a quicktime movie.

Day 2: continuation of Filming

Our second day of filming was more focused on the short grabbing clips that will intercut with the alleyway scene.  We decided to film in a dark room, so the audience's attention will concentrate only on the characters. This was inspired by Fincher's 'Silence of the Lambs'.

Screenshot of day 1 filming

On location, shooting our film at night in the alleyway, we followed our shot by shot storyboard to ensure that our filming would be more precise.

Digital Storyboard of 'Extort'.

Final Prelim (Arons Edit)

Here is my final Prelim edit, due to being at an exam i missed the editing session hence the 'Arons Edit'
Enjoy.

Order of our Title Sequence.

Further Production Schedule.

Calendar of what needs to be done and when.

We have decided that our film title will be called "Extort". We analysed the meaning of the word, so that it makes sense with our film. We checked for other synonyms; however, extort had a certain ring to it.
We used TFL to help us get to our location the easiest way possible.

These are the stops that the bus we will take include to get to know were to get off.

Location Timing

As our film has to be shot at night we have looked at the setting of the sun to make the atmosphere of the film tense and eerie. To start shooting after the sun sets on saturday 25th. We have a specific time set to meet at our location at 5:30.

Trial version

This is a trial storyboard of the alleyway scene.
We have produced this so we can follow it shot by shot and to get a sense of how we are going to shoot it.

from Donna

Hi Guys

Could you please put your storyboard on the blog!

Some of your shots of the alley way look stunning. You could use these and produce a digital storyboard.

Are you filming this weekend?

Can you please all attend my class tomorrow, so that we can look though your blog and plan your filming in more detail.

See you then

Donna

Planning - Target Audience

The target audience for the film will be cohesive with the demographic for the genre.
In this case, we are looking to create a sequence that will emulate that of a Action/Thriller film. Therefore a majority of the audience will be fairly aimed at a male audience between the demographic age of 17-40. Although the story line is based on a romantic relationship between the main character and his kidnapped wife, therefore it will also be appealing to girls & women who like action/thrillers. Here is a slideshow of films that our aimed audience would like too.

Planning - Costume & Props

Here is a slideshow i created via Slideful.com showing a variety of suits that i the main actor will be wearing in order to portray a businessman on his way home from work.

I changed the template design, i added more colours and various fonts to make our blog look more attractive and unique.

Potential Soundscore styles

I feel that the alley will emphasize a dark, haunting feel to the piece and the lighting will enchance the cold urban feel to the film opening. Dark dissonant atmospheres would be ideal for this piece.

Here are a few songs that could inspire the soundscore:

We will not be using these ideas because we have changed our filming ideas.

Here is the final product from the movie i uploaded showing how this was made.

Screen Capture of Making a Moodboard on photoshop

Here is a video i created showing how i made a Mood Board on photoshop.
First i started screen capture using quicktime movie, then i opened up photoshop.
I had to convert & compress the file too.
This was all done from home

Locations 2

Here are some more possible locations.

This first is 'St Johns Church' which dates back to the 18 century, survived the war and has a very traditional architecture which reflect on that era. At nigh it looks very eerie and ghostly, and is local to my house. I feel this would be ideal for a ghosty hybrid thriller.

The second location is a graveyard 10 minutes away form me.

Lastly, another church/gravyard which is situated around my area. I'm pretty sure living in walthamstow with all this crime is a reason to why theres so many lol.
