Us filming the Prelim
Aron setting up the camera getting ready to shoot the prelim.
Aron is filming the intro to the prelim from many different angles.
Another camera angle is used to make the prelim look more realistic to other film intros.
Jamila is adjusting the tri-pod, to make the camera record steadily.
Aron cameraing his eye (extreme close up) for a scene in the prelim.
These are the props we used using our prelim: handcuffs for the criminal, a photo of the victim etc.
More footage of the shooting of our prelim 'Case 29'.
Close up shot of the end of the prelim.

Soundtrack Pro
For the sound scoring to our 'Arlington road' piece, we used software called soundtrack pro.
I have a lot of experience in manifesting sound, sound engineering and producing, i really enjoyed using this piece software. I will explain briefly what i learn via screenshots and annotations
This is the software, it's designed for apple and used to add and create a soundtrack to movies, slideshows and anything that uses multimedia.
Firstly we opened up the software via the dock on apple.
We then imported our projects into the soundtrack pro software by dragging and dropping the rough export.
Then a similar window appeared, where we had a timeline similar to final cut, this is were all the media and sounds are placed. We could listen to the timeline with the film playing simultaneously.
Here is a image that i have labelled to show the different area's of the program, each part has an allocated label showing it's use within Soundtrack Pro.
This is the automation window, which allows you to automate the volume of a loop. I used this sever time to allow the loop to introduce itself slowly and subtly within the sequence.

Hi Guys
You all seem up to date, so well done!
please can you add a 'talk to camera' about adding titles and sound to the Arlington Road footage. this will make your blog entry about the learning curve much stronger and also show you are using technology to it's full advantage.
If you add examples of your practical work can you write a few line underneath to anchor this work and explain about the process. i.e. what technological and creative skills you have developed form the experience?
thanks Donna

Popularity of film genres in the cinema
Watch A Thriller Film Of Your Choice (Holiday Homework)
Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project is a low budged American Horror/Thriller film released in 1999. The film is entirely fictionally yet it is presented as a narrative documentary and pieced together from amateur footage.
The introduction initially shows us the production company logos, 'Atistan" "Hoxan Films" then in plain white text on a black background the movie title "The Blair Witch Project" is shown, the film them continues to show text telling the audience "In 1994 footage of students was found whilst travelling.. etc etc" The scene then allows the main character to be introduced via homemade film footage of her introducing herself and telling the camera she will be leaving her home to go on a trip to the forest with her college mates, all done in a humours sense of course.
Genre: Thriller/Horror. It is a very suspense filled piece, with lots of irregular jumps to get the audience scared, making it more of a thriller, as not much gore/action is presented in the film until the ending scene. Lot's of it is made of the viewers to interprete in their own way, allowing the scene to play in their mind.
Story: The initial story is about several college friends who choose to have a weekend in forest just outside the city, the main reason is to check out the rumours and ancient storys of a witch who lives in the forest. The story is slow, yet the students then start to realise the storys were no gimmick and scary, unexplainable things start happening to them while they sleep, objects move, people die and so fourth, so they use the book to further dwell into the forest and seek the witch.
Camera/Lighting: Being a low budget film, the main filming was carried out on a consumer camera, filmed in analogue non digital equipement, giving the movie a vintage feel making the story more believable as it was portrayed in a documentary form. The lighting in the forest was often dark and gloomy enchanting the mise en scene of the film, giving a scary edgey atmosphere to the film. Many camera shots were taken from first person, so thats were the filmed lacked yet this was to enhance the documented storyline. Much of then camera was distorted and blurry at the nighttime, filmed using night-mode, although the natural light of the forest provided more than enough light to give a clear image during filming.
Music/Sound: Lots of diagetic sound was used, such as ruffling of leaves, panting of breathing, screams and crackling of sticks and twigs. No music was used as it was presented in a documentary form.

Film Audiences
Show your research int film audiences, specify the target audience for thriller films in particular.
Film audiences are very dependant on the genre and age rating of a film, as a 18+ film will not be able to accept 8 year old, which ultimately helps determine the Audience. Audiences of films are based on a certain demographic and criteria. For Example many of Disneys traditional cartoons such as Toy Story are more popular with younger audiences and a criteria of young children aged 4-10 to mothers, and families. Thrillers can feature lots of different audiences depending on the actors, location and gender targets. Although its mostly aimed for a conscious audience who are impressed with a complex storyline. The demographic is mainly younger men but its all dependant on the features of the movie; which can appeal to a certain audience or a more diverse audience.
Explain Genre & Subgenre
What is a Genre ?
A Genre is essentially a category that a film fits into based on the elements of the film. These elements can help classify which Genre the film belongs to. For example, a film directed for children which features lots of comedy, cartoon animation and young humour would be more lenient towards the comedy genre, Genres are identify by conventions used during the film which will help determine the Genre.
What is a Sub Genre?
A Sub Genre is a film that uses several conventions that belong to different Genres, this ultimately makes the film a cross genre. For example, a film that is set in on another planent with based on different lifeforms but features lots of comical dialoge and scenes could be defined as a Sci-Fci Comedy. This has been used a lot in industry with films such as Avatar which is a Non Fiction/Action and films such as Twlight which features lots of mythical creatures and vampires but features a heavy romantic story line with action
scenes.
Example of Sub Genre Film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2T7d8j6I5I
Personally i think sub genres are a great way into appealing to a wider audience and in a way taking exclusive conventions from different genres and merging them to create a more appealing, interesting movie. Personally when producing music i use a variety of genres to produce a sub genre, for example i will take the influences of ambient music, combined with garage music and new elements of R&B vocals to produce a sub genre called 'Future Garage' here is an example of one of my pieces.
